Jesus Who Shows Mercy

Chapter Context

The purpose of this lesson is to present the appearance of Jesus' mercy through various events. Our example is Jesus, who shares in the pain of those who come to him in pain. Through this lesson, teachers should take care to give training that helps to develop the feeling of compassion in children.

Teacher's Guide

  1. Conviction

    - Jesus is merciful.
    - Jesus healed many sick people.
    - Jesus wishes that each one of us show mercy to others.
  2. Attitude

    - Like Jesus we should show mercy on those who suffer..
    - We should love and be thankful to Jesus who shows mercy on us.
    - We must be happy to hear and obey the words of Jesus.

  3. Habit

    - Instead of shooing away the beggars who come to your home, help them in any possible ways.
    - Do not tease handicapped or mentally challenged people.
    - Help the sick or old people at home.

  4. Teaching aids

    Pictures of Mother Teresa nursing the sick, pictures of those are hurt in war, sick, old people, handicapped people (you can get these from newspapers), pictures of Jesus healing the sick, charts (Luke 6:36).

  5. Presentation of the lesson

    Enter into the contents of the lesson by telling stories or incidents of Mother Teresa caring and nursing the sick, orphans and old people who roamed in the streets of Calcutta. Jesus the symbol of mercy – Present the incidents of Jesus healing the sick so as to imprint this image on the hearts of children – Use appropriate pictures. One can make them to perform a role-play on the incident of Jesus healing the blind men. How can we show mercy on those who suffer? One canhave a discussion on it. Few things children should make note of – Behaviour towards old people, handicapped people etc – Specially explain these to children. Let students themselves share different practical ways to show mercy and compassion. Give them the understanding that “Be Merciful” is Jesus’ command
  1. Let us sing, Let us pray

    (Check the guidelines given in previous chapters)
  2. Can you describe the events?

    Let students describe the events related to the sentences given. Let them use their own words and thoughts.
  3. Picture Reading

    Allow them to concentrate on the pictures and understand them. Clear the doubts they have on it. Then ask them to describe the events. This activity can be done alone or in groups.
  4. Find out the answers

    1. Jesus felt compassion towards the poor and the sick.
    2. The leper expected Jesus to cure him.
    3. Jesus touched their eyes and healed the blind men.

  1. There are many other incidents in the Bible demonstrating
    Jesus’ mercy. You can present in class by reading the Bible to
    them or describing the events.
  2. Account of the witness

    Let them describe the events of the paralyzed man being let down before Jesus with his cot from the roof and Jesus healing him. The events should be described as if an eye witness. Children can describe the events that happened at home or the things they saw during picnics. Teachers should give instructions to children to describe this event as a witness and also take required practice for it. Let them seek help of their parents.
